Bernard Spilsbury
forensic science
Antonio Holverstott
Dr. Spilsbury demonstrated that forensic science could be used in a very important but yet destructive way. He proved that the smallest details of a crime were one of the most important parts of a case needed to arrest and convict criminals in order to keep jurisdictions safe from the encouragement of additional illegal activity. He also gave the dark side of this blooming field of scientific study. He gave hypothetical statements on crimes if they were actual facts. This practice, in some ways, continues in the American court system. Forensic scientists claim that their work is immune to all scientific scrutiny, but in reality, the federal government has stated that no such thing exists in other fields of science and therefore has led to many wrongful convictions and even deaths.

This article is very intriguing, I found his story with the “Brides in the Bath” very interesting on the grounds that he figured out such a weird way for these women to be killed. Along with this victory in the courthouse for himself, he also helped pave the way for preserving evidence by using covered hands and boxes. This idea changed modern forensics in its entirety, this new way of thinking brought professionalism and cleanliness to the criminal field only improving investigations.

This article was very interesting, especially about the case “Brides in a Bath” because at that time nobody else could find evidence as to how the women died. Spilsbury’s tests on how the victims could have been murdered and his theorizations contributed to modern forensics. It’s also cool to find out he came up with the collecting evidence methods that are still used today. Although his hypothesizations got him far, he eventually was just seen as someone who controlled the court. However, his contributions in this field helped enable advancements for forensics.

Forensic science is so interesting and I love learning about the history of it. I took Forensics in High School and it was one of my favorite classes. I also really like shows that surround forensics science because there’s so much mystery and question behind it. It was very cool to read about Spilsbury and his upcoming to being one of the most famous forensic scientists ever. Great article Vania!

Spilsbury’s story seems somewhat calm, like an upper class kid who grew up to be what someone else wanted, but finally turned out to be a brilliant man himself when he followed his own instincts. I think forensics is an extremely interesting field that requires a huge amount of imagination and creativity, but also the ability to pay close attention to the surroundings and to the minor details, in other words, it almost reminds me of the work of a nineteenth century novelist, of a naturalist artist, that is, it reminds me of a fabulous talent that asks for our interpretations and inquiries.

Bernard Spilsbury was a fortunate man to be blessed with education from his family’s money. He may have been arrogant, but I believe it was because he had been given everything and nothing piqued his interest. His personality was just the right one to shine light on to forensic science. After solving the “brides in a bath” cases, his fame grew along with the “foolish studies”. We are lucky to have a fascinating founder.

It’s amazing to see how far forensics has come since then and it was all because of the advancements that Dr.Spilsbury has made. Considering the circumstances around at the time and how difficult they made his job, it’s great to see he got his hard earned success. It also amazes me how careless they were in the past when it came to treating evidence.

Spilsbury had his life set up by his parents without thinking about what he wanted to do. After going through medical school, he took an apprenticeship and went through forensics. He was able to solve a crime after examining the crime scene and thinking how it would have occurred, leaving Smith to be guilty. Spilsbury then grew a reputation for his hard work.

I love hearing about the bathtub experiment in the courtroom. He actually hadn’t tried out his hypothesis before, so when he tried it he almost accidentally drowned his volunteer (she was knocked unconscious and had to be revived by the doctor in the courtroom)

This was a really interesting article to read. Forensic science is one of those fields that is in a way glorified due to mainstream shows and pop culture. I never would have thought that there was a history to it because it’s always been around for as long as I’ve been alive. It definitely has advanced within the 21st century and technology for forensic will continue to advance. This was a really great article and I’m glad I learned a lot from it.
