Gymnosperms: An Unexpected Contribution to Cancer

First of all I would like to congratulate all of my friends and peers from General Biology Two, Section D for publishing their articles. The effort and time put into such well designed infographics should be applauded and recognized. I hope you are all proud.
Secondly I would like to honor Dr. Terry Shackleford for her persistent editing and active engagement throughout the research project. She made the research project feel less like an assignment and more like a self accomplishment.
I would also like to sincerely thank my close friends and family for their endless support and encouragement throughout this time in my life.
Lastly, I would like to honor both Dr. Terry Shackleford and Dr. Bradford Whitener for presenting me with such an opportunity, this would not have been possible without the two of you and your support. Thank you so much.

I really like the color scheme that was put into this infographic and the little pictures accurately depicts what they are talking about. For example she uses little pine cones to have a visual as to what the evolution of Gymnosperms might be. What really caught my attention was the title, I did not know that Gymnosperms would contribute to Cancer. It’s really interesting to see how Paclitaxel has become more effective over time and is now used to treat breast cancer. Overall it’s a really good infographic and I was able to learn so much from it.

Hunter, thank you for this excellent infographic. Not only is it informative, but it’s easy to follow. I was familiar with the basics of gymnosperms before, but didn’t know that they were used in this way. That is amazing. That statistic on breast cancer is devastating. I am glad to read there’s more ways being found to help. To think that this placitaxel was found in the 1960s gives me hope that with our better technology we’ll find more things that help cure cancer or minimize its effects.

I was a biology major and your infographic explained a complex subject easily. I understood what you were trying to convey in one infographic when I could barely understand my lectures. I also really loved the design and color way. The topic was also interesting so it made me want to keep learning about gymnosperms. Overall, it was a really great infographic.

I’d like to first say, what a great infographic! Right from the beginning the title immediately grabbed my attention and told me as a reader what was to be expected. Before reading this I will admit to not having the most profound understanding on the subject, however after I had finished going over the infographic and absorbing everything it had to offer (Which is to say a good amount of information) I was very much well informed on how these vascular plants have proven themselves over time to be an effective chemotherapy treatment. I especially liked the added effort of providing additional information as well as defining the vocabulary you used on how these plants operate and how they’ve adapted over the years.Overall a very well informative infographic with a clean design and a great title.

I found your infographic to be engaging and educational I enjoyed reading about Gymnosperms. I knew about Gymnosperms before but I had no idea that they could have such a positive impact on the human body. I have a pine tree planted at home it’s tall and it produces an abundance of pine cones. I have a new appreciation for pine cones and how they can impact society in a positive way.

I appreciate the content of the infographic, which is both interesting and unexpected, but in my opinion the exact information presented feels a bit cluttered. That is, I feel that there was an excess of written information. I also feel that there were things that could have been given more attention in favor of others. I would have liked to see, for instance, the section on the process by which gymnosperms help cancer patients (“How It Works”) a bit more developed. To that end I did not really gain a full understanding.

At first, I was unsure of what a gymnosperm was and how it correlates to a potential contribution to cancer. Now after reading the very informative piece, I was able to understand and comprehend the correlation. However, since I am not too familiar with the biological or scientific terms I had to do some separate research relating to key terms for a better understanding. This was an educative and well-designed infographic.

As someone with only introductory information to Biology, I admire the effort and time it would take to create an infographic that is meant to be understood by the general public. Even though the technical terms were difficult to understand, the overall background information was conveyed reasonably. I was shocked to learn that 50% of patients diagnosed with breast cancer have a chance of fatality and believe that as a woman myself, would be enticed to learn more about that and educate myself.

Before reading this article, I had no idea what gymnosperms were, but now I know what they are, where they are from, and their active contribution to cancer. You presented the information in an organized way while still making it engaging for your audience. I liked how you provided a word bank with the essential vocabulary to understand the article better. Overall, great job! This infographic provided valuable information on gymnosperms and their potential in cancer treatment.

Hello Hunter! Thank you so much for making such an insightful infographic. As someone who’s had a pre-cancerous tumor and a family history of breast cancer, I found this to be a great source of information especially with the side effects portion. When creating an infographic of my own as a political science student, I’ll remember your infographic and keep in mind how important it is to make sure that a reader should be able to follow along and understand what is being discussed. You did a good job of this by providing your audience with key vocab words so that they too would be able to clearly understand the terminology being discussed. Good job!
