“The most violent element in society is ignorance.”
Emma Goldman could not escape the title people gave her as being just another “Jewish woman.” Criticism came to her because of this and she even stated, “life was linked with that of the race.”11 On the contrary, Emma Goldman kept her head up. Candace Falk says Emma envisioned herself as “a woman who could transcend the boundaries imposed by the stereotypical social constructions of religion.”12 Emma would express herself through written word as time progressed. Nearing the last few years of her life, in 1937, Emma showed her concern even more for the striking rise of Nazism. Emma took to writing about this now because of her shock in learning about Adolf Hitler and all that he proposed. She wanted to exclaim how she had fought so hard for the right of a good life for the Jewish community, and she wanted to emphasize how Jewish culture was not to be annihilated, but appreciated for its contributions. She dreaded the future that was to come, and she urged the need for countries to take in Jewish refugees. Only three years later, in 1940, Emma Goldman unfortunately died from a stroke in Toronto, Canada where she lived in hopes that she would be allowed to visit the United States.13 Emma Goldman stood up for many things throughout her life, and did not hide her voice from the crowd. She persevered, she never gave up on her ideas and beliefs. She stood up for those who needed to be heard and she did not apologize for it. She was feared, and she was adored. She, in herself, is a symbol of free expression and through this she wanted people to follow in her footsteps. She wished for a better world for those who were oppressed. She wanted a world where women were looked at as being more than their physical bodies. She fought for equality and she fought for fair treatment. Emma Goldman was a woman who was not afraid to speak when so many tried to silence her.Anarchism

This article caught my eye…I had no idea about this woman. It was sad to hear that she was discriminated against for her religion. She attracted many different types of people because of her knowledge of politics. She became a philosopher after being a political activist. She gave many female activists their voices to this day and it is truly inspiring.

This article was saddening while equally inspiringly hopeful! To see her strive for independence and a better life for herself is so inspiring. With this consistent search for improvement, her persistence and perseverance shine through all that she is challenged by. To move to the United States and begin speaking as she did is not often heard of. It almost shows that she held no fear, but I am sure that as obstacles arose and others tried to shut her down, she became a bit concerned for her future. Nevertheless, she would not let her enemies win, and that is the important piece that I took away from this article.

This is a very interesting article. Like many I have never heard of her before, thank you for bringing her to light. It sad that she had such a tragic childhood but from that I think that she grew into someone stronger. What she was fighting for, what she advocated was very admirable. Especially with how women where treated during this time. She was a very strong misunderstood women.

The story of Emma Goldman is tragic and sad, thank you for this interesting article. I really like the statement: “The most violent element in society is ignorance.”. Most people think that the person who directly caused the crime was the one who should be criticized the most but the scariest crime is the ignorance from society. She had to suffer from it, but she was such an admirably strong woman.

The title truly caught my eye as I had no prior knowledge of this complex woman. I am amazed at how saddening yet equally inspiringly hopeful this article is! To see Emma Goldman strive for independence and a better life for herself is very inspirational. To move to the United States and begin speaking as she did is rarely heard of. This is a great article on Emma Goldman and her historical significance. You stated what she fought for and why people feared her so much. She is truly an inspirational figure. Birth control is a topic many fear talking about because of the criticism it brings. However, I feel like today we are now more open to discussions concerning this topic, which is why I think it is important we learn about historical figures like Emma in order to acknowledge what she did because she definitely had an impact on where we are today.

This was probably the wildest read I’ve ever read on this website. Someone that started out wanting to be a doctor turning towards music back to doctor. Doctor dreams being crushed my gender norms and then turning into one of the first anarchists. This was a very interesting read and shows how someone who believes they have nothing are always the most dangerous. Very well-made article and I hope to read more from you.

I thought this story was very inspirational. The way the author explained the back story of Emma’s life also helped tie in her life long mission. I wouldn’t have known the struggles that she endured. Especially being a Jewish Woman during world war II. It must’ve been so hard to get took seriously and I commend her for being so brave and brilliant.

It’s great to see women take over their voices and put them to use when nobody else can. I had never heard her story before, and its amazing how she continued to push herself through all the ups and downs of her life. She continued to defy the rules of men, and continued to empower other women to do the same thing, never let anyone take your voice away.

This was a very interesting article I have never heard of Emma Goldman. But she was a political activist and writer, in which, she attracted big audiences. Soon after she became a philosopher, a lecturer in wines rights and social issues. even after all the hardship she had as a child it molded her to be very persistent in what she wants and how she was going to achieve it.
