This infographic discusses the changes in the EU’s sourcing of natural gas. Europe’s reliance on Russian natural gas shaped its energy security policy for decades. This left the Eu vulnerable as Russia supplied nearly half of its gas used in 2021. After the invasion of Ukraine, the EU shifted from reliance on Russia to diversifying its supply. Imports were replaced by Norway, the US, Africa, and the Middle East. This infographic illustrates how Europe restructured its gas supply and what changes can be assumed long-term. The infographic also shows how energy security is an issue of national security when you do not produce your own supply. It highlights how quickly geopolitical events can reshape energy markets and how diversification reduced the EU’s exposure to political pressure. In comparing 2021 and 2023 data, the infographic demonstrates scale of transition.
