For my project on the transition from slavery to freedom, I set out to create an emotional and historically grounded music video that captures both the suffering enslaved people endured and the powerful hope that emerged as freedom approached. My goal was to show the journey from bondage to liberation through music, imagery, and storytelling. The video begins with the harsh realities of plantation life, moves through moments of family separation and quiet resistance, and builds toward the announcement of emancipation. The final scenes highlight the joy, uncertainty, and determination that came with stepping into freedom for the first time.
Tools I Used
  • Suno AI V4 – Lyric Generator: Helped me create historically themed lyrics with proper structure for music generation.
  • Suno AI – Music Generation: Produced the soundtrack for my video, matching the emotional tone of the story.
  • DALL·E 3 / Gemini Nano Banana – Image Generation: Created historically inspired visuals for each scene in the video.
  • DaVinci Resolve – Video Editing: Used to assemble the music, images, transitions, title card, and credits into a final polished video.
Creating this project helped me understand the emotional weight of slavery and the strength it took for enslaved people to survive and fight for freedom. Using AI tools allowed me to bring this history to life in a visual and musical way, but the heart of the story comes from the real people who lived through it. My hope is that this video honors their resilience and reminds viewers of the importance of freedom, humanity, and remembering the past.

    Hello Javen,
I believe the video successfully accomplished its intended purpose. I appreciated how the story developed and found the background music to be very effective. The pause on the black screen effectively created a sense of suspense, encouraging viewers to stay engaged and curious about how the song would conclude. It is clear that, through videos like this, we continue to remember and acknowledge the enduring legacy of the era of slavery, highlighting that this is still a relevant and important subject.

    Hi Javen,
Wow, your project brought tears to my eyes. You captured the “journey from bondage to liberation” in such an impactful manner that it helps us the audience connect with your video. There was something about “told my mom to bow her low. The world ain’t built for her kind of soul” that really hit home. I can connect this with the current challenges that Somali is facing. If you would like to read my article “A Century of Cutting: Civil War and Anti-FGC Activism” you will see the similarities of navigating through such a complex reality of Somalians. I fear for those who are caught between the conflict of insurgent groups and a feeble government that leaves Somalians exposed to further suppression. In the midst of the conflict, there is a quiet resistance that will soon prevail. Great job on your project, Javen!

Hey Javen, this project is very emotional and narrated the story of slavery in some magical way. The usage of your storytelling, music and imagery is phenomenal by using pathos. My favorite scene was the final scenes where both the joy and uncertainty of newly gained freedom, highlighting that liberation was not just an endpoint but the beginning of a new and complex reality. This connects to my article of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the sense that both histories are shaped by long-term struggles over identity, conflict, and survival within complex systems of power.
