Van Gogh’s Battle with Mental Illness results in a Severed Ear

Vincent Van Gogh was an admired artist, who was also a troubled and “tortured genius.” His artwork, Starry Night, Bedroom in Arles, and many others have earned him fame and recognition as one of the greatest artists of his time. But what many remember most about this artist is the story of his severed ear. Although his art is exemplary, his struggle with mental health and self-harm is admirable. His struggle was overlooked due to his incredible talent. He was successful as an art dealer, but as an artist, he had to prove himself with the headquarters of international art dealers, Gopil & Cie. During his lifetime, Van Gogh was the poster boy for the image of starving artist. His artwork was not recognized until much later in his career, which could have been a leading cause of his major depression and anxiety.1

Van Gogh, born in the Netherlands, decided to start his career in Paris in the 1880s, where many of the age’s great artists also resided. He believed he could get recognition for his pieces through his younger brother, Theo, who made his living as an art dealer. His brother introduced him to many artists, including Georges Seaurat, Camille Pisatto, and Paul Gauguin. Upon meeting these successful artists, Van Gogh was greatly inspired by their work and began creating his own artistic style, beginning in 1883. Later the same year, Van Gogh rented a small house in Arles, in the south of France. Paul Gauguin and Van Gogh became close friends and later roommates. They consistently bounced ideas off of each other and created a strong friendship.2

Like many friendships, theirs was rocky, and they found themselves drifting apart. Gauguin had moved on to a different artistic style and was exploring other ideas. Van Gogh at the time, had been reciprocating signs of depression and mental health issues, but at the time, these symptoms were considered normal. When Gauguin decided to explore other art spectrums, it involved moving out of the house he and Van Gogh shared. He broke the news to his roommate about his intentions, and this evidently this made Van Gogh go over the edge. He did not take the news lightly and both men began verbally arguing. Van Gogh had disappeared for a few hours and when he returned to confront Gauguin, he had a razor blade in hand threatening to hurt Gauguin.3

During the confrontation, however, Van Gogh was hesitant to hurt his friend and decided to turn the blade on himself and completely cut off his ear. Gauguin left him bleeding and alone. Van Gogh bandaged his head and began drowning himself in alcohol. During this episode, he walked out of his home and into the streets where he found a prostitute. The ear that he had severed off of himself had been neatly wrapped in a cloth; since Van Gogh was still heavily intoxicated, he decided to present this token to the prostitute. Patiently, she ran off and alerted the police about her encounter and they immediately rushed to his home.4

Shortly before Christmas Eve, Van Gogh was found by police in his bed, partially conscious and with major blood loss. Authorities rushed him to the hospital where he surprisingly recovered. Meanwhile, Gauguin was brought into questioning, but gave no testimony on the incident. It was believed that Van Gogh had suffered a severe mental breakdown long before he had severed his ear, but that this created a ripple effect that led to lunacy. The real reason behind the infamous Van Gogh ear-cutting may never be known; Gauguin had promised Van Gogh a pact of silence on the situation in letters that they supposedly exchanged. 5

After the incident, Van Gogh was admitted into a psychiatric facility in hopes of recovering mentally and physically. The dramatic change was not helpful for such a troubled artist, and in July of 1890, Vincent Van Gogh ended his life with a revolver. Before his suicide, however, he created a very iconic painting, Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear 1889. Van Gogh intended to persuade his doctors that he was perfectly able to continue working and creating art by creating this self portrait. He presented his piece, leaving a trail of wonder for his supporters as to why he included certain details in this particular piece, mainly because he continued to paint himself in the same yellow house he and Gauguin shared. Doctors overlooked these details and allowed Van Gogh to leave the facility.6

The epidemy of many artists like Van Gogh is often associated with mental instability, drug use, and alcohol abuse. Van Gogh had an array of medical issues that were tied back to his coping mechanisms (alcohol abuse), and as a result, many did not understand the struggles he faced and degraded him as a person while idolizing his artistic talent. As said before, the real reason behind his mutilated ear will be unclear, but his work and talent will continue to inspire and educate.

The fascination of the art world is a wonderful platform for artists to show their creativity and freedom of expression through their own lens. Van Gogh, is no doubt a remarkable and talented artist, I have become very interested and fascinated in his paintings, however I never realized how much of his personal life was unaware. The article does an eloquent job at deeply explaining his start and inspiration to be an artist, and how the pressures of the outside world can deeply hurt the inner most demons of some. Although, he was sought out to be problematic and a bit psychotic for cutting of his ear, and being referenced as a drunken man, his past was able to create a magnificent line of paintings that would later be embraced and loved my many today.

I have been a fan of some of his many famous art works, but i was completely unaware of many of the issues he faced in his life such as mental illness and substance abuse. After discovering that about him i definitely view his art differently and actually appreciate it more, because it allows us to see exactly what his mind visioned despite those issues. Although Gogh had a troubled-some life as he was little troublesome himself and felt as if his art wouldn’t be appreciated, he and his art are legendary and loved by many people so much that there are many products that include some of his work such as Starry Night.

Very interesting article. I was actually told when I was younger that he cut off his ear partially and this is what has confused me for a good portion of my life. Honestly, before this article I think I had alot of my facts about Van Gough’s mixed up. Especially when he signed himself into the psych ward. I thought that that was because he was also mentally disturbed, before meeting Gaugin. This is why we need articles like yours to dust of the cobwebs of what we know.

Van Gogh has always been a favorite to me since I love the colors he used and the way he expressed his feelings. I have always admired him not just because of this, but because of how detailed and observant his art is. I am always very intrigued to learn more about his life and art and this article allowed me to do so. I am happy of how the article finishes because many articles I have read tend to care more about the ugly part of Van Gogh’s life rather than his contributions to culture and society. Great research and article!

Almost everyone in the English speaking world has heard of Van Gogh, with his iconic label being his lost ear. I found it extremely interesting to learn that it had more to do with friendship along with mental and financial struggle. I had originally thought he chopped off his ear for love-I was wrong. I also didn’t know that he committed suicide and it reminded me of how many artists, especially in music, struggle mentally but its overlooked in their work-A good example of this is Kurt Cobain. And most times, the struggle is paid attention to until they’re already dead and its too late.

I have long been a fan of Van Gogh’s art, but I never new much about the man behind the paintings. I had no idea that he suffered from persistent mental illness. I think it is sad that his struggles went undetected until he reached the point where he severed his ear. Although many advances have been made in today’s society, I feel that mental illness still goes undetected until it is oftentimes too late. We as a society need to work harder to detect and treat these illnesses.

Vincent Van Gogh has been one of my favorite artists, and I thought I had already known much of the back story to this troubled painter however once I read this article i realized how much information is till so unknown about him. For instance I had never realized that the trigger which drove him to cut off his ear was a disagreement which arose when his roomate at the time wanted to move out. Prior to this article I had never realized that that episode was sparked by his roommate moving out. Overall great job!

One of the most talented artists to have ever walked on earth. Van Gogh expressed his emotions and view of the world around him so eloquently with the use of color. This article helps readers understand a man who most know for his breathtaking painting such as “The Starry Night” and the fact that he cut his ear off and presented it as a gift to a prostitute as a mentally ill artist.

When you think of Van Gogh you think of the self he committed by cutting of his own ear. I didn’t realize this was due to mental illness, but the illness could explain that action. What was shocking is how his work wasn’t appreciated till later on. Maybe this is how the public opinion on art could change. What this article shows is sometimes the people that are brilliant in their line of work, are often faced with problems such as Van Gogh drinking problem.

In the past, I had taken many art courses and one even included some art history. I had always heard of Van Gogh, his famous works, and some of his life story but after reading this article, I realized that there is much more that I had missed. For example, I never knew about his severed ear, his mental struggles, his younger brother Theo, nor the story about he and his roommate. This article was well packed with information and attention grabbing narrative.
